TRI-108 A Gut Feeling: Gut Health, Nutrition & Hair
Hair and scalp concerns do not always begin and end at the scalp. In this foundational course, students in the Certified Scalp Scientist™ program examine how gastrointestinal physiology, digestion, nutrient absorption, dietary patterns, supplement use, metabolic wellness, and lifestyle factors may influence the biological environment in which hair grows. The course introduces focused digestive-system review, the basics of digestion and absorption, the gut microbiome, gut-skin and conceptual gut-hair discussions, macronutrients, micronutrients, and common nutrition-related topics in hair conversations such as iron, vitamin D, zinc, biotin, collagen, probiotics, and multi-ingredient hair supplements. Students also learn to evaluate popular claims involving gluten, “leaky gut,” inflammation, and wellness testing with appropriate scientific caution. A major emphasis of the course is professional boundary setting. Students are taught how to gather relevant nutrition and gastrointestinal history, document client-reported information objectively, identify patterns without diagnosing disease, and recognize when concerns should be referred to a physician, registered dietitian nutritionist, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare professional. Through case-based learning, interactive presentation content, workbook activities, and applied analysis, learners build the practical reasoning skills needed to think beyond the scalp without overreach. This course is ideal for students who want a balanced, integrative, evidence-informed approach to the relationship between whole-body wellness and trichology practice.
What you will learn
- Describe the major gastrointestinal structures and their primary functions in digestion, absorption, and elimination as relevant to trichology practice.
- Explain foundational processes of digestion, nutrient absorption, and factors that may influence nutrient availability without equating symptoms with diagnosis.
- Differentiate established knowledge from emerging claims regarding the gut microbiome, gut-skin/hair concepts, intestinal permeability, and inflammation.
- Compare the physiological roles of major macronutrients and selected micronutrients in normal systemic and hair biology, including deficiency and excess considerations.
- Critically evaluate common claims involving biotin, collagen, probiotics, gluten avoidance, hair-growth supplements, and other wellness-marketed products.
- Gather and document a relevant nutrition, gastrointestinal, supplement, medication, and lifestyle history within trichology scope using neutral, culturally respectful interviewing practices.
- Recognize red flags and situations requiring referral to appropriate healthcare professionals, including concerns related to nutrient deficiency, gastrointestinal symptoms, restrictive dieting, allergies, laboratory findings, and medically complex conditions.
- Apply evidence-informed integrative reasoning to case scenarios by distinguishing case facts, possible considerations, unsupported claims, appropriate education, and necessary referral while remaining within professional scope.
